Johari’s interest in genealogy began in 1977 after watching Roots, Alex Haley’s groundbreaking seven-night television series. Witnessing the brutal story of what her ancestors might have endured compelled Johari to wonder about her own family’s past. She became determined—nearly obsessed—with learning how to uncover those answers.
After speaking with her father about his parents, she learned that her grandfather had “disappeared” from the family when her father was a young boy, and that no one had been able to locate him despite years of searching. Johari made a heartfelt promise to her father that she would find out what happened. Through years of persistent research, she ultimately fulfilled that promise.
The painful discoveries she made about several of her ancestors launched her into a genealogical journey that has spanned more than 35 years—and continues today. That awakening inspired her lifelong mission: to uncover her own family’s history and to help others do the same.
